The Weeknd was playing the long game by showing up to last years MTV VMA’s with his face battered and bruised, and then the AMA’s in full facial bandages. They were a bridge in the narrative between his ‘Blinding Lights’ video, and his new one for ‘Save Your Tears’, in which he reveals grotesque plastic surgery. The look is disconcerting, but according to Prosthetic Renaissance, a makeup effects studio, it is just SFX make-up.
