Mackinac Island in Lake Huran, Michigan banned cars in 1898, because they were scaring the horses. Visiting the island is supposed to be like taking a step back in time, and seems like the perfect spot for a weekend getaway (I ‘ve already broached the idea to my Mom and sister). It’s super walkable, or you can take a horse drawn carriage, plus it’s got tons of cool architecture, museums, pretty views, hiking and biking trails, and fudge (apparently they’re famous for it).
