Some of the songs off Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album have been compared to others, and because of it, she’s faced plagiarism backlash. That could be why she gave writing credits on some of her songs to Taylor Swift and Paramore, who she’s mentioned as some of her musical inspirations. But is it fair to say she was copying them? Adam Levine came to her defense saying “All this calling out and s***, it’s like, music is a creative thing, and I just hate to see it crushed … When you take someone who’s a newer artist, and she’s doing things that emulate the ones from generations removed, I don’t know how bad that is. I think it’s kind of a cool thing to introduce the whole generation of young people to different musical ideas.”
New artists are going to be inspired by ones who came before them, so where is the line?
