If you’re single, and finding it difficult to meet someone that’s relationship-material, take this as your sign to log off the apps and go meet someone in person. In the very least, it’ll be a bit harder for them to lie.

A new survey by DatingAdvice.com found that several online daters are committing “digital deception.” 3,000 single Americans partook in the survey and were asked to rate the honesty of people they’ve matched with using a scale of 1-10 (from least to most honest) in different categories.

On average, the rate of honesty is 5.1 out of 10;  meaning 50% of people are lying on their dating profiles. The results were then broken down by state which found that South Dakota is the most honest state with a rating of 7.5/10. The biggest frauds are in New York with a very low score of 3.4/10. Tennesseans didn’t fare that much better, in fact, we are below average with 4.6/10 on the honesty scale.

The results kind of go hand-in-hand with more than half of people (53%) believing people in smaller towns are more honest as opposed to people living in bigger cities.

The top three things online daters are less than forthcoming about are:

  1. Relationship Status
  2. Age
  3. Appearance
